About the Katy, Texas Area
In the beginning the Katy prairie was wide open. It was a hunting ground for indian tribes, feeding grounds for buffalo, longhorn cattle and winter time wild ducks & geese.
In 1875 there was only 1 family, no railroad and no Katy, Texas. In 1895 more farmers started to call this area home. Why? There was plenty of land to farm and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad was then completed. The railroad made this area easier to get to and easier for the farmers to get thier product to the markets. The city of Katy was named for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, The MKT, which then became the KT.
In 1896 Katy was first listed in Washington, D.C. as having a post office. During 1900 a hurrican, 'The Storm', destroyed most of the city. In 1918 children from the small farm schools were brought together in Katy to start the Katy Independent School District. At this time the main industry was rice farming. In 1934 a gas field was discovered west of town. The next thing you know, Katy was on 'The Map'.
The population within the city limits of Katy, Texas is around 8,000. The surrounding Katy area rival the population of some major cities. Katy has an atmosphere of caring which mixes well with the advantages of a growing city. A small town charm along with the suburbia sophistication make Katy a great place to call home.
